OEA LEGISLATIVE WATCH

We hope you’ll join the OEA at 10 am, Wednesday morning (6/29), for the parade line up at COSI; the parade is scheduled to step off at 11 am, with a press conference at 12 noon and lunch on the Columbus Commons after. There is plentiful parking at COSI and across the street at Veterans’ Memorial Coliseum. Here are a few more pieces of information -

  • The weather for tomorrow is currently forecast for sunny and a high of 81 degrees.
  • OEA members are going to be wearing their local school district or local association shirts on Wednesday, not OEA shirts. It’s important for the press to see and continue to understand that the energy involved in this effort exists in all corners of Ohio and isn’t limited to union members.
  • There will be lunch on Columbus Commons after the parade and press conference. Columbus Commons is a beautiful, new downtown park, located at W. Town St. and S. High St. Plans are for a cookout style lunch (while food lasts) and a celebration of your hard work and success so far.
  • A handful of OEA’s top circulators will be honored and featured throughout the day. Thousands of OEA members, not to mention their families, friends and allies in the community, have stepped up to help collect these signatures. With just under 180,000 total signatures collected and returned to OEA, we have members all over the state who have made a difference in their communities and our state.
  • Please join the OEA in celebrating all of the effort and success we’ve had.

Make a Difference April 9 at the WE ARE OHIO Rally in Columbus and kick off the referendum drive to vote Senate Bill 5 off the books!

Thousands of Ohioans are planning to attend the WE ARE OHIO rally this Saturday, April 9, from noon to 3 p.m. at the West Lawn of the Ohio Statehouse, Broad and High Streets in downtown Columbus. The rally officially kicks off the drive for the citizen veto referendum to repeal Senate Bill 5, the attack on public employee collective bargaining.

On Monday, April 4, the WE ARE OHIO coalition filed preliminary petitions with the Ohio Secretary of State. The Secretary of State and Ohio Attorney General must verify that the ballot language proposed on the petitions is fair and truthful, and that process will take about 10 days. Then the coalition will print full petitions and begin circulating them.

Until then, we have plenty to do, and you can help:

  • EMERGENCY MEETING HELPFUL IN PREPARING COLLECTIVE BARGAINING UNIT

For all members who were able to attend the meeting we hope that you are feeling more informed and ready to fight the battle ahead against SB5, SB21, AND SB69! Please keep in mind that the information provided is for all certified and classified staff. Please make sure to spread the word and remember that those helping to collect names for the initial referendum signature drive should only collect signatures from registered voters who live in the same county.

The following document, discussed by President Bernetta Snell, is a Bill Analysis created by the Ohio Legislative Service Commission which outlines some of the issues that were brought up at the meeting. Please take some time to read this document carefully. It is 53 pages long, but has some extremely important information contained in it!
